De nummer 2 van het FIRST LEGO League World festival!

Atlanta (Verenigde Staten) - De jongens die bij Team STEELE horen lijken een gewone groep kinderen. Zowel de lengte van hun haar als die van hun lichaam laat het er ook weinig anders uitzien. Hun commentaar wordt vaak gevolgd door een leuke lachje en een glimlach op de gezichten van de jongens.

Hoe dan ook, het team finishte als tweede op het First Lego League World Festival - de tweede plaats in een pool die startte met meer dan 13.700 teams uit 49 landen - dat is toch een enorm goede prestatie!

Caleb Schiller, 11, uit Hoffman Estates, Alexander Meyer, 14, uit Kildeer, Barrett Kaufman, 14, en zijn 12-jarige broer, Zachary, beide uit Lake Zurich, en Ryan Cushman, 15, en Dylan Antonides, 13, beide uit Wauconda zijn allemaal thuis geschoold. Ze werken samen als team en bouwden en programmeerden een robot, die allerlei opdrachten moet kunnen uitvoeren.

"Ons doel was om de internationale ronde te behalen," zegt Antonides.

De robot die ze bouwden is erg klein - ongeveer de grootte van een op afstand bestuurbare auto. Hij moest klein genoeg zijn om gemakkelijk te kunnen manoeuvreren op een tafel en daarbij allerlei objecten oprapen en transporteren. Het team programmeerde het zo, dat hij de missies kon uitvoeren en indien nodig zichzelf kon corrigeren. Als hij dus niet geheel in goede positie stond, dan corrigeerde hij dat voordat hij een object op zou gaan pakken.

Er ging tussen de 300 en 400 uur zitten in de voorbereiding gedurende het afgelopen jaar. De robot rijdt op zes AA batterijen, en het team heeft meer dan 1.400 batterijen verbruikt tijdens de voorbereidingen.

Gedurende de competitie heeft de robot 2 en halve minuut de tijd om allerlei missies uit te voeren, en op die manier punten te scoren. 84 Teams bereikten de finale, die van 15 tot 18 april plaats vond. Het team moest er voor zorgen dat ze de kosten van de reis naar de Georgia Dome in Atlanta gefinancierd kregen.

"We wisten niet of we konden gaan, dat lag er aan of we genoeg geld bij elkaar konden krijgen om de reis te betalen," zegt Sara Kaufman, een van de coaches van het team.

Team STEELE is zo ver gekomen en moest nu dus proberen om extra geld te verdienen. Het team zette alles op alles en vond uiteindelijk sponsoren die $15.000 ophoesten binnen zes weken.

"De jongens moesten leren hoe ze telefoongesprekken horen te voeren," zegt Sara Kaufman. "Ze belden winkeleigenaren en bedrijven die meer dan $200 miljoen omzet hebben. Das was al erg opmerkelijk om te zien, die 11 tot 14 jarige kinderen die dat allemaal voor elkaar krijgen."

Team STEELE, wat staat voor Superbly Tenacious Engineers Exuding Lego Excellence, zegt dat het simpele ontwerp van hun robot een belangrijke factor was voor het uiteindelijke succes.

"We zijn het enige team met maar een opzetstuk," zegt Barrett Kaufman. "De meeste teams gebruikten allerlei opzet stukken, de ene nog groter dan de andere, maar wij volbrachten alle missies met maar een opzet stuk."

De helft van het team zal volgend jaar naar de hogere school gaan, dus voor de competitie van volgend jaar zijn nog enkele plaatsen vacant.

Atlanta (United States) - The boys who make up Team STEELE look more or less like an average group of kids. Their height runs the gamut as does the length of their hair, and their comments are often followed by a goofy laugh and smile.

However, the team's finish in the First Lego League World Festival - second place in a pool that started with 13,700 teams from 49 countries - is anything but average.

Caleb Schiller, 11, of Hoffman Estates, Alexander Meyer, 14, of Kildeer, Barrett Kaufman, 14, and his 12-year-old brother, Zachary, both of Lake Zurich, and Ryan Cushman, 15, and Dylan Antonides, 13, both of Wauconda are all home-schooled. They worked as a team to build and program a robot and complete a research project for the competition.

"Making it to the intergalactic round was our goal," Antonides said.

The robot they built is fairly small - about the size of a remote-controlled car. It had to be small enough to maneuver around a table and pick up and transport objects. The team programmed it to finish its missions and it has the capacity to correct itself if, say, it isn't in proper position to grab and lift an object.

Between 300 and 400 hours went into competition preparation in the past year. The robot runs on six AA batteries, and the team members estimate they have gone through 1,400 batteries preparing it to compete.

During competition, the robot has 2 minutes and 30 seconds or less to execute missions based on the theme of climate connections, such as raising a house onto stilts and delivering a scientist to a research area.

Only 84 teams qualified for the final, international round of the competition April 15 to 18. The team had to fight to find finances to get to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for the final.

"We didn't know if we'd be able to go if we didn't raise the money," said Sara Kaufman, one of the team's coaches.

Team STEELE had come this far and finding some extra funds proved as manageable a task as programming the robot. The team flexed their marketing and communications muscles to bring in sponsors to the tune of $15,000 in six weeks.

"The boys had to learn how to make cold calls," Sara Kaufman said. "They presented to storekeepers and to $200 million corporations. That was pretty amazing to watch 11- to 14-year-old kids (making pitches.)"

Team STEELE, which stands for Superbly Tenacious Engineers Exuding Lego Excellence, insists the simple design of its robot was an important factor in its success.

"We are the only team that we saw with one attachment," Barrett Kaufman said. "Most of the teams used big attachments but we completed all our missions with one attachment."

Half the team will move on to the high school level competition next year, while the others look to fill three vacancies in their organization.
