Master Model Builders van LEGOLAND California zijn hard aan het werk om een gigantische LEGO^® verjaardagstaart te bouwen om het tien jarig jubileum van LEGOLAND Californië te vieren.  Fans van alle leeftijden kunnen hun eigen LEGO modellen insturen voor de  “10 Years of Fun” Bouwwedstrijd. Finalisten van de wedstrijd zullen worden uitgenodigd om over de rode loper te komen lopen tijdens de LEGOLAND California’s verjaardagspartij op 20 maart 2009, waarbij ze zullen worden behandelt als een VIP en ze als eerste de nieuwe Bob the Builder 4D film “Bob and the Roller Coaster.” mogen gaan kijken.

Een kijkje in het verleden: 

CARLSBAD, Californië - 20 maart 1999 - na zes jaar van onderzoeken, plannen, bouwen en testen opent LEGOLAND Californië haar deuren!

Het 128-are grote familie pretpark opende haar deuren vroeg in de morgen op de 20ste maart van 1999. Er werden meer dan 2.000 gasten verwelkomd om als eerste het eerste LEGOLAND park van de Verenigde Staten te betreden. 

Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, kleinzoon van de oprichter van de LEGO Groep en de voorzitter van de raad van bestuur van het bedrijf, was bij de historische openingsceremonie.  "Het LEGOLAND Park vertegenwoordigd de LEGO beleving, ideeën en waarden. Het heeft mijn hoogste verwachtingen overtroffen," zegt hij.

De eerste berichten geven aan dat het verkeer gemakkelijk van de snelweg via de Cannon Road afrit naar de LEGO Drive reed, richting het park.

Tussen de vele kinderen die deze dag mee mochten maken treffen we de familie Wright uit Ierland en de familie Umplebys uit Engeland. Jessica Umpleby en Christopher Wright waren beide winnaars van de LEGO wedstrijd, een wereldwijde wedstrijd waarbij kinderen een fantasiehuis moesten bouwen. 

Ook treffen we Thomas Michon. Het 11 jaar oude jongentje uit Irvine, Californië was de LEGOLAND Californië Kinder President voor een Dag gedurende de opening ceremonies. Michon verkreeg deze eer toen hij vorig jaar de titel "LEGO Bouw kampioen van de natie" werd in een wedstrijd. 

De zes jaar oude Bryce Quick kwam helemaal uit Canada. Hij wilde maar al te graag komen vertellen welk deel van het pretpark hij het mooiste vond:  "Ik vind het allemaal te gek!!" zegt hij. "Alle attracties zijn mooi, en er is veel te zien, het is zo leuk hier!"

Jongleurs en Ballon kunstenaars verwelkomden de kinderen net na de hoofdingang van het park dat "The Beginning" heet.  Vanuit daar kunnen de families door het park lopen waarbij ze door de zes thema gebieden lopen, of in LEGO taal, "blokken."

"Miniland" deed de bezoekers versteld staan met haar zeer goed kloppende in schaal 1:20 gebouwde LEGO versie van allerlei geografische regio's van de Verenigde Staten. 

"Ik ben zo onder de indruk van dit alles," zegt Caryn Erzinger die te gast is in Carlsbad. "De details zijn buitengewoon goed. Ik zou uren in Miniland rond kunnen lopen."

Het eerste dat de meeste families aan doen is de "Village Green Block" aan de linkerkant van "The Beginning".  Voertuigen met zebra-strepen die op een Safari Tocht zijn en jonge avonturiers door een gesimuleerd Afrika rijden en ze allerlei LEGO giraffes, zebra's, leeuwen en bavianen in de echte verhoudingen laat zien.

"Het is verbazend hoe ze de dieren hebben gebouwd," zegt de 10 jaar oude Andrew Hurley uit Carlsbad als zijn jeep door de natuurgetrouwe jungle rijdt. 

"Er is zoveel aandacht voor de details. Ik wou dat ik zulke modellen kon bouwen!" zei Andrew, hij vond de LEGO gorilla het mooiste dier van de Safari Tour. "Gorillas zijn mijn favoriete dieren. Ze zijn sterk en groot. Er is niets dat de gorilla's verslaat."

Jonge kinderen vonden het geweldig om de subtiele humor van de "Fairy Tale Brook" (sprookjes beek) te ontdekken. Terwijl de kinderen in grote "blader" bootjes door de beek varen, zien ze allerlei scènes uit hun favoriete sprookjes voorbij komen. "Roodkapje danst met de wolf!" roept een peuter. Ze lachte toen de knappe prins op het witte paard langs kwam rijden op zijn paard, terwijl hij een mobiele telefoon vast houdt. 

Een stukje verderop is de Waterwerken attractie. Hier kunnen de families hun waterstralen richten op doelen in een grote fontein. Elke keer als een gast een doel goed raakt, zie je een lach van een LEGO olifant of een LEGO alligator. Andere groepjeskinderen en ouders huppen op en neer om gekleurde cirkels die rondom een grote ovale fontein liggen. Elke hup op zo'n cirkel zorgt voor een muzikale toon van een van de LEGO instrumenten die boven de fontein zijn gemonteerd. 

"Joey houdt van water, muziek en LEGO," zegt Jan Freeman uit Carlsbad als  ze naar haar vier jaar oude zoon wijst, die druk bezig is om het pad van de crikels op en neer te rennen. "Dit is een perfecte combinatie voor hem. We zouden hier de hele dag kunnen blijven!"

Verderop ligt "DUPLO(R) Playtown" *Duplo speelstad), de kleine Madison Heney, vier jaar oud, ligt lekker in een rood bed, dat gemaakt is van zachte LEGO blokken aan de onderkant van een Playtown glijbaan. 

De acht jaar oude Ruben Perez uit Carlsbad heeft de "Kid Power Tower challenge" net gedaan. Hij en zijn vriendje hebben zichzelf omhoog getrokken aan de 10 meter hoge Kid Power Tower, terwijl ze in een stoeltje zaten. 

Aspirant autochauffeurs kunnen hun lol op in "Fun Town" (Plezier Stad). Hier leren de de verkeersregels en kunnen ze hun eigen rijbewijs halen in een echte LEGO auto. Degenen die meer met schepen hebben, kunnen een les nemen in het navigeren bij de "Skipper School" (Schipper school). "De boten en auto's rijden niet op rails," ontdekt ouder Kent Chidester. "Ikvind het geweldig voor de kinderen. Ze rijden helemaal op zichzelf."

Een snurkende wachter gemaakt van LEGO stenen zit bij de ingang van "Castle Hill". Een passerende bezoeker schiet in de lach: "Dat lijkt op vader als hij slaapt!" zegt hij. De zevenjarige Nicolas Petrovski uit Carlsbad, een ervaren achtbaan rijder, die zegt in achtbanen te hebben gezeten die meer op en neer gingen dan een keer, staat ineens oog in oog met de Dragon Coaster (Draken Achtbaan) van Castle Hill. Hij was in het begin een beetje sceptisch, maar nadat hij een keer in de achtbaan heeft gezeten, die je in het kasteel langs allerlei scènes uit de riddertijd, gemaakt van LEGO voert, en daarna een enorme achtbaan rit voor je in petto heeft, geeft hij zijn mening over de rit: "Cool!"

LEGO fanaten konden terecht in de workshop sessies in de "Imagination Zone." Tezelfdertijd bouwt de vier jaar oude Dani Ashcraft een DUPLO dinosaurus en speelhuisje, Justin Joseph, 10 jaar en Spenser Bartlett, 12 jaar, beide uit Carlsbad, waren bezig om een racewagen op batterijen te bouwen welke echt kunnen rijden. En de achtjarige Alex Elahi was in de ruimte ernaast aan het racen met zijn LEGO constructie op een baan, waarbij de tijd word gemeten.

De gasten waren unaniem in hun enthousiasme voor het park. "Dit is echt een veilige zone voor kinderen," zegt grootvader Steve Sneaker. "Ik waardeer dat enorm. Het is echt gericht op families, je bent de hele dag interactief bezig! Ik vind LEGOLAND te gek. De organisatie laat zien dat het hen echt uit maakt hoe de kinderen zich hier vermaken. Het is een leuke plek om te zijn!"

The “10 Years of Fun” Building Contest starts today and continues through March 12, 2009. Contestants are asked to build their own LEGO tribute to LEGOLAND California’s 10th birthday. Entrants in three age categories (4 to 9, 10 to 15 and 16 and up) are asked to send photos of their LEGO creations to the Park to be judged by Master Model Builders. Five winning models will be chosen from each age category and photos of their models will be displayed during the birthday celebration on March 20. A view into the past:

CARLSBAD, Calif - March 20, 1999--After six years of research, planning, construction and testing, LEGOLAND California is officially open.

The 128-acre family theme Park opened its gates an hour early this morning to welcome 2,000 guests already waiting out front to enter the first LEGOLAND Park in the United States.

Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, grandson of the founder of The LEGO Group and the company's Chairman and CEO, was on hand for the historic  opening ceremony. "The LEGOLAND Park truly represents LEGO exuberance, ideas and values. It has exceeded my highest expectations," he said.

Early reports indicated traffic was flowing smoothly from the Interstate to the Cannon Road exit and LEGO Drive into the Park.

Among the eager youngsters racing inside this morning were the Wright family from Ireland and the Umplebys from England. Jessica Umpleby and Christopher Wright were both winners of the LEGO Challenge, a global contest where kids designed a fantasy home.

Also eager to get into the Park was Thomas Michon. The 11-year-old Irvine, Calif. boy was sworn in as LEGOLAND California's Kid President for a Day during the opening ceremonies. Michon won the honor when he was named the nation's championship LEGO Builder in a competition last year.

Six-year-old Bryce Quick came all the way from Canada. The little guy was hard pressed to say what his favorite part of the family theme park was. "I like all of it!" he said. "All the rides, all the stuff to see -- it's so fun here!"

Jugglers and Balloon Artists greeted children just inside the main entrance at "The Beginning." From there, families fanned out into the Park's main six themed areas, or, in LEGO language, "blocks."

"Miniland" amazed first-time visitors with its amazingly accurate 1:20 scale LEGO representation of geographical regions throughout the nation. Guests delightedly pointed out the LEGOLAND salute to tomorrow's academy awards -- foot-tall yellow-brick "Buddies," the Park mascot, flanking a tiny replica of Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. LEGO brick celebrities on a red plastic "carpet" were posing for a tiny entourage of photographers while LEGO brick limos lined the street.

"I am so impressed with this," said premiere week guest Caryn Erzinger of Carlsbad. "The detail is incredible. I could stay in Miniland for hours."

The first stop for many families was the Village Green Block to the left of The Beginning. Zebra-striped vehicles on the Safari Trek ride took young adventurers through a simulated Africa to see real sized LEGO giraffes, zebras, lions and baboons.

"It's amazing how they put the animals together," said 10-year-old Andrew Hurley of Carlsbad as his jeep whizzed by the life-like wildlife.

"There's so much detail. I want to build models like that!" Andrew said he appreciated the LEGO gorilla the most on the Safari Trek. "Gorillas are my favorite animals. They're big and strong. No one messes with gorillas."

Youngsters were quick to point out the subtle humor built into the Fairy Tale Brook ride, where large "leaf" boats took youngsters through their favorite story book adventures. "Little Read Riding Hood is dancing with the wolf!" a toddler squealed. She also laughed when she saw Prince Charming was astride his white horse, holding a cell phone.

A few yards away at the Waterworks attraction, families took turns aiming huge water squirters at targets in a fountain. Every time a direct hit was scored, a LEGO elephant wiggled its ears, or an alligator gave a toothy grin. Other groups of kids and parents together hopped up and down on colored circles surrounding a large oval fountain. Each hop produced a musical tone from the LEGO instrument in the fountain directly in front of the circle.

"Joey loves water and music and LEGOs," said Jan Freeman of Carlsbad as she pointed to her four-year old son who was busy running from pad to pad and back again. "This is a perfect combination for him. We could be here all day!"

Aaron Stiles and Linea Stern, both Carlsbad four-year-olds, giggled at the LEGO instruments that made music and squirted water. "This is so fun!" they squealed. Even the "older" set of visitors enjoyed the interactive water games. After successfully hitting the elephant target for the third time, ten-year-old Josh Lovollo said, "that was cool."

Over at The DUPLO(R) Playtown, little Madison Heney, four, went lunging into a soft bed of red spongy LEGO blocks at the bottom of a Playtown slide, and came up laughing as she ran over to make sure her mom saw her latest feat.

Eight-year-old Ruben Perez of Carlsbad took The Kid Power Tower challenge. He and his companion pulled themselves up the 30-foot Kid Power Tower in a chair contraption at least half a dozen times before their turn on the ride ended.

Aspiring drivers flocked to The "Fun Town" block to learn the rules of the road and earn their own driver's license behind the wheel of an electric LEGO car. The marine-minded got a lesson in navigation at Skipper School. "The boats and cars aren't on tracks here," observed parent Kent Chidester. "I think that's great for the kids. They really are driving on their own."

A snoozing guard made of LEGO bricks sitting at the entrance to the "Castle Hill" block elicited a giggle from one young passer-by. "That sounds like Daddy when he's sleeping!" he said. Seven-year-old Nicolas Petrovski of Carlsbad, an experienced roller coaster rider who said he's been on rides that go upside down more than once, eyed the Dragon Coaster on Castle Hill with some skepticism. However, after his ride on the coaster, which speeds guests on an adventure right through the imposing castle, Nicolas gave it his stamp of approval with a single word--"Cool!"

While munching on her lunch of chicken fingers, chips and cookies at the Knight's Table restaurant in Castle Hill, six-year-old Alanna Cassidy reviewed her favorite parts of LEGOLAND. "I liked the jesters and the princess on the stage over there," she said, pointing to a group of performers just yards away from the market-style restaurant. "I got called on stage. They called me 'the girl in the overalls,'" she said.

LEGO maniacs were immediately drawn to the workshop sessions at the "Imagination Zone." At the same time four-and-a-half-year-old Dani Ashcraft was lining up DUPLO dinosaurs and playing house, Justin Joseph, 10, and Spenser Bartlett, 12, both of Carlsbad, were creating battery-powered race cars across the hallway. And, eight-year-old Alex Elahi was racing his LEGO contraptions down a timed track in the next room.

On a culinary note, many guests commented on the food is throughout the Park. "The pizza is great," said Eric Bravender, 11, of San Juan Capistrano. Eric's grandparents had brought him to LEGOLAND for the day, and their smiles said they were enjoying the Park as much as he was.

Guests were unanimous in their enthusiasm for the Park. "This really is a safe zone for kids," said grandparent Steve Sneaker. "I appreciate that a lot. It's so interactive here, so family-oriented. I like what LEGOLAND stands for. The organization cares about the kids. This is a good place to be."
