These small vehicles were issued in the 1950's and 1960's to compliment the LEGO® sets which could be used to build Houses, Churches shops etc , and remained in production util they were replaced by LEGOLAND® vehicles in the early seventies . Before the plastic cars were introduced LEGO made large scale models of vehicles from Wood and plastic , such as a gas tanker, the cab was plastic and the tanker was wood , also in a larger scale were a series of VW Beetles made for sale at VW Garages in Germany in the 1950's , this is roughly 1/50 scale. LEGO made the small 1:87 scale cars until 1968/1969.

All models were made of coloured ABS plastic, the wheels were made of steel. The Volkswagen Beetles (number 260/261 and 661) were made of transparant plastic and were painted after moulding. LEGO established its own Molding department in Billund in 1953 – in 1959 it moved to Vejle and got the name LEGO Form, with 23 employees.  LEGO could not produce all the needed LEGO forms themself and ordered forms for some of the small LEGO Model cars by an Moulding company in Stuttgart. Their contact in the Stuttgart company was Walter Kohler. In 1958 LEGO Werkzeugbau was established in Hohenwestedt, Walter Kohler was appointed manager of the company.  In 1959 there were 22 employees. In 1959 a cooperation with British Celanese LTE in Wrexham was established. In the sixties they produced the LEGO forms for Jaguar and Vauxhall.
